Sixteen students from across the United States are spending two weeks in and around London, between 10th and 25th July, as part of the 2010 ACS International Schools’ and British American Business Council (BABC) British Summer Studies Program (BSSP). During their trip the students will be visiting various sites of cultural and historical interest whilst boarding at ACS Cobham International School.

Many of the students have never traveled overseas before but were awarded scholarships to attend the summer school by ACS International Schools and the British American Business Council (BABC) as part of a joint commitment to rewarding academically gifted yet financially disadvantaged students by offering them both culturally and academically enriching opportunities.

The course is designed to help 16 to 18 year-old students from the US and around the globe broaden their understanding of British culture and heritage. The program is divided into two units covering Shakespearean England, the Industrial and Romantic Revolutions, and Britain in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Frequent trips develop first-hand experiences with the subjects studied and include sites which shaped the evolution of British history, including the Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Portsmouth Harbor (home to historic ships such as the Mary Rose), and the National War Museum. Going slightly further afield, students also cross the Channel to experience World War I battlefields and museums in France.

This year’s students herald from Houston, Chicago, Charlotte, Washington and Boston, and they will also be joined by one current ACS International School student and a recent alumnus.

Hope Ajayi, BSSP scholar from Washington, commented:

“I have never travelled to the UK before so I am very excited to have the wonderful opportunity of participating in the British Summer Studies Program. I think that I was successful because I wanted the opportunity so much and I put my very best efforts into the application process. I am looking forward to the entire experience but particularly the travelling and learning about a different culture and country.”

Andrew Kittell, Director of Corporate Relations for ACS International Schools, said:

“BSSP really is a wonderful experience for the students that take part and we are grateful to BABC for the continued support of the British Summer Studies Program, giving talented students the opportunity to realize their ambitions.”

The sixteen students are attending the fourteenth year of the British Summer Studies Program, which was founded in 1997 by ACS International Schools. This year brings the total number of scholarship winning participants to nearly 200 students from America and EU countries over the past thirteen years and marks the continuing success of the programme.
